Winemaker
Brillant ruby colour. Notes of toast, mocha, "garrigue" and cloves. A fresh, powerfull attack. Full-bodied, complex structure. Delicate oaky finish.

Winemaker
Pale yellow with brilliant grey tints. Complex nose of apricots, yellow peaches and tropical fruit (mango). Fleshy and persistent on the palate.

Clos Saint Jean
What can i write that will give proper acknowledgement to what has occurred at this extraordinary estate since 2002,
when brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel took control of Clos Saint-Jean,
and had the foresight to bring in the gifted wine consultant/oenologist, Philippe Cambie.

Their first vintage (2002) was the worst year for Châteauneuf du Pape since 1932, but they survived it to go on and make an incredible succession of wines starting with some of the finest 2003s.
Those were followed each vintage with remarkable efforts, ending with what may be the finest 2008s I tasted on my recent trip. This is an old, very large estate (110+ acres) with fabulous old vine holdings throughhout the appellation.
They possesses vineyards in some of the Châteauneuf du Pape's finest areas, including the plateau on the west, the famed La Crau on the east,
and some sensational old vine parcels just north of the village. There is considerable history at Clos Saint-Jean, with the first estate-bottled wines being produced in 1910, but Vincent and Pascal's father sold the wines as they were bottled,
so frequently the wines were oxidized and tired by the time they were bottled. Now, everything is bottled at the same time,
essentially after 12-15 months of aging. The same winemaking philosophy is used for all the cuvees, which are different blends from different parcels.
However, Vincent, Pascal and Phillipe Cambie only age their Grenache in tank.
The Syrah and Mourvedre are aged in one- and two-year old demi-muids, and occasionally smaller barrels. With the construction of a new winery in 2009, this
estate appears set to have a even more efficient operation, with more space than they had in their old, turn of the century facility.
The 2008s have turned out well, primarily because the Maurels waited to achieve full maturity in this challenging vintage.

There was lots of culling out of the mildewed grapes as well as enormous labor-intensive efforts at the winery's
triage tables.

D e s c r i p t i o n
Through this cuvée, Paul and Edith Chaudière have been looking for
the perfect balance between Grenache and Syrah, the two king grapes
of the Rhône Valley. They chose the name "Artemia" as it means in
the same time good health and integrity in ancient Greek.
S o i l
The Grenache parcel is at about 280 meters, south – south east
oriented, on a very pebbly lime-stones soil that has an amphitheater
shape. The Syrah parcel is at about 340 meters, south – west
oriented, on a very old alluvions soil.
G r a p e s
50 % Syrah (over 50 years, yields of about 25 hl / ha)
50 % Grenache (over 80 years, yields of about 25 hl / ha).
V i n i f i c a t i o n a n d a g i n g
The grapes are hand picked at an optimal maturity beginning of
October, drastically selected and absolutely destemmed. Long
fermentation and maceration in 4 hl barrels for the syrah part and
wooden vats for the grenache. Malolactic fermentation in barrels.
Aged 18 months in barrels (50% new and 50% of second and third
year) with a selection of very tight grains. Bottled at the ChâteauD é g u s t a t i o n
Nose: A very aromatic nose with grilled and black berries note and a
nice minerality.
Mouth : The very balanced mouth associates fruit and power of syrah
and the richness, the unctuousness and the spices from old
grenache.
Food and Wine pairing : Serve at 18°C accompanied by terrines,
roasted red meats, meats in sauces, game. We recommend especially
to pair Artemia with duck and scrambled eggs with truffles.
