Smaak
Het is een intense wijn, heel krachtig, met veel zoet donker fruit,
kersen, pure chocolade, room, specerijen en wat peperigheid, zachte
tannines, harmonieuse houtlagering, mooie zuren en frisheid.
Een wijn die veel eleganter is dan de Shiraz die we doorgaans uit
Australië kennen, mede door de Noordelijke ligging van het
koelere Orange wijnbouwgebied.

Wijngaard
De wijngaarden van Climbing beginnen op 600 meter en “klimmen”
op naar een hoogte van 1000 meter. Het klimaat is continentaal te
noemen met veel zonlicht, milde dagen en koude nachten. Dit resulteert
in zuivere wijnen vol fruit en elegantie. Het label van Climbing
is net als Rolling zeer opvallend, gebaseerd op een 100 jaar oude
foto van mannen die klommen voor het avontuur. Dit label heeft zelfs
de zilveren medaille gewonnen tijdens de 2005 Wine & Spirit
International Design Awards in Londen.

This is one of the wines...being made by two-time International
Winemaker of the Year Philip Shaw. It's a vibrant cool-climate shiraz
with minimal oaking, a core of rich plum and black berry fruit,
integrated peppery characters and juicy tannins. Drink it with marinated
beef.

The grapes come from the Orange area west of Sydney, where cooler temperatures help explain why the wine has intense plum flavours that don't taste like prunes, which sometimes plagues shiraz wines from hotter climes. It also has pepper and coffee notes.

Innovative Philip Shaw needs no introduction to those with a leaning towards premium-end wines, but he's really gone outside the square with a 2005 Shiraz created for Climbing Wines at Orange, one of Australia's highest and coolest wine regions.
In this wine he's crafted a drop that's classically European in in style in its elegance and defined bright varietal fruit flavours, yet at the same time true-blue Aussie in its intensity and fullness.
Philip Shaw has had long connections with the unique Orange climate and topography, and as Climbing Wines' Director of Winemaking made his first wines for the label in 2004; his 2005 Shiraz that's just been released came from a growing season characterised by warm, dry conditions that gave low yields and a resultant intensity of flavour.
