Le
Volte Rosso
Druivenras
: Sangiovese, Merlot & Cabernet-Sauvignon Kleur:
Paarsrood. Geur: Intens, kersen
en ander rijp rood fruit en confiture. Smaak:

Ornellaia
2005:
Born in a cooler than usual year, the aromatic complexity
and freshness of the 2005 Ornellaia reflect the conditions of
the harvast. The delayed harvest allowed us to obtain perfectly
ripe tannins that are soft and silky. Deep ruby red in colour,
it has an elegant, complex bouquet with red and black berry fruit
supported by underlying hints of tobacco and spice. On the palate
the wine is full and enveloping, displaying a powerful, extremely
elegant densely woven tannic structure that flows into a long
fruity finish with balsamic overtones. Winemaker's
notes
Grapes: 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc
and 4% Petit Verdot. |

Color The visual examination reveals an intense ruby
red complimented by darker purple reflections. Aromas
The intense bouquet offers enticing aromas of ripe fruit such
as prunes and blackberries layered with nuances of tobacco and
leather,
as well as hints of cinnamon and cloves. Taste On
the palate,
this wine is broad and complex. Perfectly integrated tannins mix
impeccably with the alcoholic component, resulting in a silky,
well textured body. The vibrant flavors weave into a warm and
satisfying finish.
Suggested use
This wine goes well with red meat, roasted or cooked
in flavorful sauces.
It also pairs well with aged cheeses. |

Spectator comments:
"the wines are richer and more concentrated than
2006 but still have excellent structure and balance".
This wine shows an inky, dark purple color, with its initial aromatics
that expand to further illustrate ripe, dark fruit. Rich cassis,
minerals and French oak are immediate on the palate, while the
superb density of the fruit tames the tannins.
Cellaring will proffer a melding that promises balanced integration
and deeper complexity. This wine should be cellared until 2016
and maturing will continue through 2026.
Originally founded by Lodovico Antinori (brother of Antinori's
Piero) in the early 1980s and now owned by Frescobaldi. |

Ornellaia,
Druivenras: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Petit Verdot Kleur: Robijnrood.
Houdbaarheid: Nog even
afblijven, lekkerder over 1 of 2 jaar.
Zeker nog 10 jaar houdbaar. |

Il
Poggione is Montalcino’s fourth largest
estate, with an eye-popping 125 hectares of Brunello designated
vineyards, behind Banfi, Castelgiocondo and Col d’Orcia.
My annual tasting spanned every wine in barrel from 2006-2010.
I continue to be deeply impressed by the average level of quality
father and son team Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci coax from
these sites. Frankly, it is hard to go wrong with any of the Brunelli
Il Poggione has put into bottle over the last few years. The straight
Brunello remains one of the most reasonably priced, cellar-worthy
wines in the world. The 2006s are rich, bombastic wines that will
require patience to drop their baby fat. The Brunelli are fermented
with a submerged cap and pumpovers, an approach that is unusual
in Montalcino but common in Piedmont. My visit ended with a taste
of the 1955 Brunello,
which is still in great shape, even after all these years.

The 2005 Brunello
di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli
is a phenomenal effort in this average vintage. I am amazed by
the estate's ability to make a wine with this level of textural
richness, depth and sheer power in 2005. This is a dark, inward
Brunello loaded with black fruit, smoke, tar, menthol and a host
of other dark, sensual aromas and flavors. The wine’s length
and intensity are truly a marvel to behold.
It is a stunner. The 2005 Riserva spent 25 days on the skins and
40 months in French oak casks. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035.

Brunello di Montalcino
2006 (SOON AVAILABLE)
The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is another superb Brunello from
Il Poggione. The ripeness of the vintage meets a classic sense
of structure as this bold, full-bodied wine takes shape in the
glass. The 2006 doesn’t have the elegance or finesse of
the 2004, instead it offers a decidedly more virile, masculine
expression of Sangiovese. Dark cherries, tobacco, smoke and underbrush
wrap around a wall of tannin as the finish builds to a majestic
close.
Il Poggione’s Brunello remains one of the best values in
fine, cellar-worthy wine.
Anticipated maturity: 2016-2036. Robert

2006 - Vigna Paganelli (NOT YET RELEASED)
The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli offers
up plums, black cherries, tar, menthol and a host of other balsamic
nuances. The Riserva shows gorgeous inner perfume and an extra
touch of density in the fruit that balances the building tannins
through to the imposing, regal finish. The 2006 Riserva is shaping
up to be another masterpiece from Il Poggione. Anticipated maturity:

The 2007 Rosso di
Montalcino is a soft, floral wine with pretty red fruits that
meld into tobacco, spices and minerals. The wine possesses lovely
inner perfume to match its accessible personality. The 2007
is a relatively open vintage for the Rosso, and while I don’t
see this vintage making old bones, it should offer highly pleasurable
drinking over the next few years at a minimum. In 2007 Bindocci
decided to de-stem 70% of the fruit, which yielded an especially
soft, approachable wine. Because Rosso is a wine generally made
for near-term consumption, its hard to argue with that approach,
especially in this economy. Still I miss the firmer style of
Rosso the house is capable of.
Anticipated maturity: 2009-2017.

Masseto

Druivenras:
Merlot. |

SuperTuscan
Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese
component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with
Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from
"Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly
Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There
is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the
term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have
no Sangiovese and
are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'
In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically
to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These
were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification
of Italian wines
because they either contained grapes not permitted (international
varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently
(I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted
at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to
be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless
quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices
above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello
di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began
to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans?
because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the
prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities,
under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included
the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the
SuperTuscans.
The original Super-Tuscan, Tignanello is produced exclusively
from the Tignanello vineyard,
a 47 hectares (116 acres) southwest-facing, calcareous rocky-marl
and limestone soil plot with tufaceous elements, planted between
1,150 and 1,312 feet above sea level at Antinori's Santa Cristina
Estate. It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels,
the first red wine in modern times to use a non-traditional grape
variety, Cabernet, in the blend, and among the first red wines
made in Chianti with no white grapes. In all three instances,
it set the example for a new breed of exceptional top-of-the-line
Italian wine. Tignanello, originally a Chianti Classico Riserva
labeled Vigneto Tignanello, was first vinified as a single vineyard
wine in the 1970 vintage, when it contained 20% Canaiolo and 5%
Trebbiano and Malvasia, and was aged in small oak cooperage. With
the 1971 vintage the wine became a Vino da Tavola della Toscana
and was named Tignanello after the vineyard from which it originates.
Beginning with this vintage, Tignanello stopped adhering to the
rules laid down by Chianti Classico Disciplinare, and with the
1975 vintage, white grapes were totally eliminated. Since the
1982 vintage, the blend has been 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet
Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Tignanello was not produced in
the 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984 and 1992 vintages. |
